Candlelight is ancient, mysterious, romantic and haunting. Think about where you often see candles: Places of worship; romantic dinners; in windows at Christmas (a Moravian tradition); in random haunted house movies; really, candles have been part of our lives for so long and in so many ways.
The earliest candle fragment found dates back to the first century A.D. in Avignon, France. The Romans invented candles with wicks and candles as we know them today have been around since the Middle Ages. The oldest candle manufacturer in the world is Rathbornes in Ireland - since 1488! It is believed that candles have been around since 300 B.C. Prior to that, wicks were laid in oil to obtain their fuel. More candle history can be found here.
Random trivia: the "Rolls Royce" of candles come from Cire Trudon in France. They are the oldest wax manufacturer in the world (1643) and supplied candles to Versailles until the end of the French monarchy.
Recently, chandlers (the proper term for a candlemaker), have been using paraffin and soy waxes with a variety of wicks to create beautiful illumination. Think of that the next time you light a candle - that you are doing a simple thing that billions of people have done for thousands of years for a myriad of reasons.
